West Coast Beaches

The West Coast beaches of New Zealand’s South Island are a raw, untamed spectacle where the Tasman Sea crashes against wild, windswept shores. This stretch of coastline, particularly around Haast, offers dramatic scenery of driftwood-strewn sands, ancient rainforest meeting the sea, and the chance to spot seals or penguins. It’s a place to feel the power of nature, far from the manicured beaches of the north.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least half a day to explore a few of the accessible beaches and viewpoints. If you’re driving the Haast Pass, break your journey with stops at Ship Creek and Knight’s Point. For a more immersive experience, allow a full day to walk to Monro Beach and relax at Jackson Bay. The area is best enjoyed as part of a 2–3 day stay in the Haast region, combining beach time with inland rainforest walks.
