Twizel is a small, purpose-built town in the Mackenzie Basin, offering a peaceful base for exploring the turquoise lakes and towering peaks of the Aoraki/Mount Cook region. With a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe, it's a haven for walkers, cyclists, and stargazers.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Pukaki: Drive to the shore for jaw-dropping views of Aoraki/Mount Cook reflected in the milky-blue water. Stop at the Lake Pukaki Lookout for the classic photo.
- Hooker Valley Track: One of New Zealand's best day walks, this easy track leads through swing bridges and alpine scenery to the glacier-fed Hooker Lake, right at the foot of Mount Cook.
- Aoraki/Mount Cook Village: The hub for glacier tours, scenic flights, and the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. Even if you don't hike, the drive is spectacular.
- Twizel River Trail: A flat, family-friendly cycle or walk along the braided river, with mountain views and birdlife.
- Dark Sky Reserve: Twizel lies within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, look up for an unforgettable star-filled sky.
- Lake Ohau: A quieter lake with excellent fly fishing and the scenic Lake Ohau Alpine Village nearby.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to soak up the highlights: one day for the Hooker Valley Track and Mount Cook Village, a second for cycling or exploring Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau, and a third for a scenic flight or simply relaxing. If you're short on time, a full day can cover the Hooker Valley Track and a drive to Lake Pukaki.
