Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in the South Island and second largest in New Zealand, is a stunning fiordland gem framed by rugged mountains and ancient forests. The lake's deep, dark waters reflect the dramatic peaks of the Kepler and Murchison Mountains, creating a mesmerizing backdrop for outdoor adventures. As the gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound, Te Anau offers a perfect blend of serene lakefront charm and thrilling wilderness experiences.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Te Anau & Lakefront Track: Stroll or cycle the easy 5km lakefront trail from the town center, offering panoramic views of the lake and mountains, with benches for soaking in the scenery.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves: Take a boat cruise across the lake to explore limestone caves illuminated by thousands of glowworms – a magical subterranean experience.
- Milford Sound Day Trip: From Te Anau, it's a scenic 2-hour drive to Milford Sound, where you can cruise past waterfalls, seals, and sheer cliffs.
- Kepler Track: One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this 60km circuit starts near Te Anau and offers hut or day hikes through beech forest, alpine ridges, and along the lake shore.
- Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre: Learn about the region's ecology, history, and walking tracks, with helpful DOC staff and interactive exhibits.
- Birdlife & Wildlife: Keep an eye out for native birds like the takahe (at the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary), kea, and kaka, as well as deer and possums along the lake edges.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Te Anau, allowing a full day for a Milford Sound trip (including drive and cruise) and another day to explore the lake or a short walk on the Kepler Track. If you're a keen hiker, allocate 3–4 days for the full Kepler Track or combine with other Fiordland walks. The town itself can be seen in a relaxed afternoon, but the lake's beauty deserves at least a sunrise and sunset.
