Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in the South Island and second largest in New Zealand, is a stunning fiordland gem framed by rugged mountains and ancient forests. The lake's deep, dark waters reflect the dramatic peaks of the Kepler and Murchison Mountains, creating a mesmerizing backdrop for outdoor adventures. As the gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound, Te Anau offers a perfect blend of serene lakefront charm and thrilling wilderness experiences.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Te Anau, allowing a full day for a Milford Sound trip (including drive and cruise) and another day to explore the lake or a short walk on the Kepler Track. If you're a keen hiker, allocate 3–4 days for the full Kepler Track or combine with other Fiordland walks. The town itself can be seen in a relaxed afternoon, but the lake's beauty deserves at least a sunrise and sunset.
