New Zealand's Southland Scenic Route is a spectacular drive through the rugged heart of the South Island, weaving from the wild West Coast near Haast across the Southern Alps to the pastoral plains of Southland. This journey is a masterclass in contrasts: dense rainforest, braided rivers, alpine passes, and the vast emptiness of Fiordland's fringe. You'll feel the road's raw energy as it climbs over Haast Pass, passes turquoise lakes, and opens into golden tussock country. This is a drive for those who crave solitude and epic landscapes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least a full day (6–8 hours of driving) to travel the route from Haast to the Southland plains, not counting stops. To truly appreciate the walks and viewpoints, plan for two days with an overnight in Wanaka or Makarora. The road is well-maintained but winding; take your time, especially in wet weather. Many travellers combine this with a trip to Milford Sound or Queenstown, adding 2–3 days.
