Ship Creek, a wild stretch of coastline just north of Haast, offers a raw and atmospheric taste of the West Coast’s untamed beauty. Here, the Tasman Sea crashes against a driftwood-strewn beach, while a short boardwalk trail winds through a lush podocarp forest to a tranquil lagoon. It’s a place where the elements feel powerful and the landscape remains gloriously unpolished – perfect for a contemplative stroll or a picnic with the sound of waves in the background.
Highlights & What to See
- Ship Creek Beach: A vast, dark-sand beach scattered with bleached driftwood and sea-sculpted rocks – dramatic at any time, but especially moody in the low afternoon light.
- Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk: A 20-minute boardwalk loop that leads through a dense stand of kahikatea (white pine), one of New Zealand’s tallest native trees, with ferns and mosses creating a prehistoric atmosphere.
- Dune Lake Walk: A longer 40-minute return trail that crosses sand dunes to a peaceful lake behind the beach, where birdlife such as royal spoonbills and herons can often be spotted.
- Historic Gold Mining Remnants: Keep an eye out for old mining relics along the Dune Lake Walk – the area was a hive of activity during the 1860s gold rush.
- Sunset Views: The west-facing beach provides spectacular sunsets, with the sun dipping directly into the Tasman Sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside 1 to 1.5 hours to fully experience Ship Creek. This allows time for both short walks (the swamp forest loop and the dune lake trail) plus a relaxed wander along the beach. It’s an ideal stopover on a drive between Haast and Fox Glacier – aim to arrive in the late afternoon for the best light. If you’re pressed for time, the swamp forest walk alone takes just 20 minutes and still delivers a strong sense of the area’s unique ecology.

- Fox Glacier: About 90 minutes north, the famous glacier offers guided walks and helicopter tours, plus the nearby Lake Matheson with its mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Franz Josef Glacier: Another 20 minutes north of Fox, with glacier valley walks, hot pools, and a lively township.
