Ross is a tiny gold-mining town on the West Coast that packs a surprising amount of history and charm into its compact streets. With a population barely reaching 300, this former gold-rush hub feels like a living museum, where the legacy of the 1860s gold rush still echoes in the old buildings, the historic cemetery, and the very ground beneath your feet. The star attraction is New Zealand's largest gold nugget, the 'Honourable Roddy', discovered in 1909 and now proudly displayed in the local museum. Ross offers a quiet, off-the-beaten-path stop for travellers driving Highway 6, with a handful of cafés, a pub, and a chance to try your own luck at gold panning in the creek.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Ross is a brief but rewarding stop. Budget 1–2 hours to visit the heritage centre, try gold panning, and take the town walk. If you're keen on a longer break, add 30 minutes for the Water Race Walk. It's an ideal midday pause on the drive between Hokitika and Haast.
