Otira Gorge is a dramatic mountain pass on the South Island’s West Coast, where the road clings to sheer cliffs above the Otira River. This short but thrilling stretch of State Highway 73 connects Arthur’s Pass to the coast, offering jaw-dropping views of dense rainforest, cascading waterfalls, and rugged peaks. It’s a must-drive for anyone crossing the Southern Alps, with plenty of pull-offs to soak in the raw, untamed beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least 1–2 hours to drive the gorge itself, including stops at viewpoints. Most people combine it with a half-day or full-day trip from Arthur’s Pass or Hokitika, as the road is part of the scenic route between Christchurch and the West Coast. If you’re hiking in the national park, plan for a full day.
