Deep in the remote forests of the West Coast, the Oparara Basin is a realm of ancient limestone arches, mossy caves, and pristine rivers that feel a world away from modern life. This wild corner of Kahurangi National Park rewards those who make the journey with spectacular natural architecture and a profound sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Oparara Arch – One of the largest natural limestone arches in the Southern Hemisphere, spanning 43 metres. Walk through its cavernous opening and marvel at the rainforest-framed view.
- Moria Gate Arch – A smaller but equally dramatic arch, with a river flowing beneath it. The short walk here passes through lush fern-filled forest.
- Box Canyon & Crazy Paving Caves – Explore a narrow limestone canyon and a cave system filled with intricate rock formations. Bring a torch and sturdy shoes.
- Oparara River – Crystal-clear waters perfect for spotting native blue ducks (whio) and, if you’re lucky, the rare kōkako.
- Honeycomb Hill Caves – A network of caves containing fossils of extinct birds, including moa – accessible only on guided tours from Karamea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day to do justice to the basin’s main attractions. A half-day works if you focus on the two arches and a short river walk, but the extra time allows for the Box Canyon and a peaceful picnic by the water. The gravel access road from Karamea takes about 40 minutes each way, so factor that into your schedule.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Karamea – The last town before the basin, with a few cafés, a pub, and the start of the Heaphy Track. Stock up on supplies here.
- Ōkārito Lagoon – A serene coastal wetland 90 minutes south, famous for birdlife and reflective kayak trips under the Southern Alps.
- Punakaiki & the Pancake Rocks – The dramatic layered limestone formations and blowholes are a two-hour drive south and a classic West Coast stop.
- Heaphy Track – One of New Zealand’s Great Walks, beginning near Karamea. Even a day walk along the first section gives a taste of the region’s diverse landscapes.
