Tucked away on the wild West Coast of the South Island, Okuru is a tiny, off-the-beaten-path settlement that feels like a secret shared only with the wind and the waves. This is New Zealand at its most raw and untamed, where the Tasman Sea meets ancient rainforest and the only sounds are birdsong and the crash of surf. Okuru offers a genuine escape from the tourist trail, a place to breathe deeply and connect with the elemental beauty of the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Okuru Beach: A vast, dark-sand beach stretching for miles, often completely empty. Perfect for solitary walks, beachcombing for driftwood, and watching the dramatic West Coast sunsets.
- Okuru River Mouth: Where the river meets the sea, this is a great spot for birdwatching – look for white herons, royal spoonbills, and oystercatchers. The lagoon behind the beach is also a peaceful place for a paddle in a kayak.
- Haast River Walk: A short, easy walk through lush rainforest to a viewpoint over the Haast River. The track is lined with ferns and mosses, and the sound of the river is ever-present.
- Ship Creek Beach & Walk: Just a short drive north, this is a must-stop. The Dune Lake Walk leads through a surreal landscape of sand dunes and a tea-coloured lake, while the Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk takes you into an ancient forest of towering kahikatea trees.
- Jackson Bay: A scenic drive south to the end of the road, where a tiny fishing village sits at the foot of the Southern Alps. The fish and chips from the Jackson Bay Crayfish are legendary.
Suggested Time to Spend
Okuru itself is a place to slow down for a day or two. Most travellers pass through on the Haast Highway, but to really appreciate its solitude, plan an overnight stay. Spend one day exploring the beach and river mouth, and a second day to venture north to Ship Creek or south to Jackson Bay. If you're on a tight schedule, a two-hour stop for a beach walk and a picnic is still worthwhile, but you'll leave wishing you had more time.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast: The main service town of the region, with a supermarket, petrol station, and the Haast Visitor Centre, which has excellent displays on the area's natural and cultural history.
- Haast Pass: A stunning drive over the Southern Alps connecting the West Coast to Wanaka and Central Otago. Stop at the Blue Pools, Fantail Falls, and the Gates of Haast.
- Jackson Bay: As mentioned, a charming end-of-the-road village with a tiny wharf and incredible views of the Southern Alps meeting the sea.
- Landsborough River Valley: For experienced trampers, this is one of New Zealand's great wilderness treks. The valley is remote and spectacular, but only for well-prepared hikers.
- Bruce Bay: A beautiful, windswept beach famous for its piles of white quartz stones and stunning views of the alps. A popular spot to leave a painted stone as a memento.
