Plunging 22 metres into a deep, jade-green pool, Mclean Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Catlins. A short but enchanting walk through lush native forest – dripping with ferns and moss – leads to a viewing platform that puts you right in the spray zone. The roar of the water and the cool mist on your face make this a truly immersive nature experience, a must-stop on any South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- The waterfall itself – a powerful cascade surrounded by dense temperate rainforest, often rainbowed in the afternoon sun.
- Mclean Falls Walk – an easy 40-minute return stroll along the Tautuku River, with boardwalks and bridges that keep you dry even after rain.
- Birdlife – listen for the bellbird and tui calling from the canopy; you might spot a kererū (wood pigeon) flapping through the trees.
- Photography – the viewing platform offers a classic shot of the falls framed by ferns; bring a wide-angle lens and a tripod for slow-motion water effects.
- Nearby Tautuku Estuary – a short detour to this tranquil estuary is great for spotting wading birds and enjoying a picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside 1 to 1.5 hours for the walk and time to soak in the atmosphere. The track is short and well-graded, so it’s easy to combine with other Catlins attractions in a half-day loop. Visit in the morning for softer light and fewer crowds, or late afternoon when the sun filters through the trees.
