Mackenzie Country is a vast, high-country basin in New Zealand's South Island, where the Southern Alps meet the sky in a landscape of turquoise lakes, golden tussock grasslands, and star-filled nights. Named after the legendary sheep rustler James Mackenzie, this sparsely populated region offers some of the country's most iconic views – from the Church of the Good Shepherd on Lake Tekapo's shores to the dark-sky reserve above. Here, you can cycle the Alps 2 Ocean trail, soak in hot pools under the stars, and feel the quiet immensity of the land.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Base yourself for at least two full days to cover the main sights. Spend one day exploring Lake Tekapo and Mount John, and another driving to Aoraki/Mount Cook for the Hooker Valley Track. If you're cycling the Alps 2 Ocean, budget three to four days for the full section through the basin. The region is compact enough for day trips from Twizel or Omarama, but staying overnight lets you experience the dark-sky reserve after sunset.
