Lake Moeraki is a serene, dark-water lake framed by dense temperate rainforest on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. This tranquil spot is best known for its world-class brown trout fishing and as the gateway to the spectacular Monro Beach Walk, where you can spot Fiordland crested penguins. The lake’s still waters mirror the surrounding peaks of the Southern Alps, creating a photographer’s paradise, especially at dawn and dusk.
Highlights & What to See
- Monro Beach Walk – A 1.5-hour return hike through lush rainforest to a wild beach; look for Fiordland crested penguins (tawaki) from July to December.
- Lake Moeraki itself – Perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or simply soaking in the reflections. The lake is a haven for birdlife, including the rare great spotted kiwi (listen for calls at night).
- Brown trout fishing – The lake and its feeder streams are renowned for trophy-sized brown trout; guided trips are available.
- Wildlife encounters – Besides penguins and kiwi, keep an eye out for fur seals, Hector’s dolphins in the nearby Tasman Sea, and white herons.
- Haast Pass Highway – The drive along State Highway 6 to and from Lake Moeraki is an attraction in itself, with waterfalls, gorges, and ancient podocarp forests.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors linger for a half-day to a full day, combining the Monro Beach Walk with a paddle on the lake or a fishing session. If you’re staying overnight at the Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge, you can enjoy a guided kiwi-spotting walk after dark. For a relaxed pace, allow two days to fully appreciate the wilderness and wildlife.
