Carved into the schist cliffs above the turquoise waters of Lake Dunstan, this 55-kilometer cycling trail is one of New Zealand's newest and most spectacular rides. It weaves through the dramatic Cromwell Gorge, past historic gold-mining relics, and offers jaw-dropping views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The trail is well-formed and suitable for most fitness levels, though a few exposed sections on cliffside boardwalks will quicken your pulse.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day to ride the entire trail one-way (55 km, 4–6 hours cycling) from Clyde to Cromwell, or do a shorter out-and-back from either end. Many cyclists tackle it as a half-day ride, starting from the Cromwell end and turning around at the Bannockburn Inlet (about 3 hours return). The trail is gentle enough for e-bikes, which can be rented in Cromwell or Clyde.
