Kaikōura

Kaikōura is a dramatic collision of mountains and sea on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. The rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges straight into the Pacific, creating a stunning backdrop for one of the country's best wildlife-viewing destinations. This is the place to spot sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals year-round, often from a boat or kayak. The town itself is small and laid-back, with a handful of cafes, galleries, and the famous Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway. The 2016 earthquake reshaped the coastline, but Kaikōura has bounced back with new cycle trails and a palpable sense of resilience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend two to three days in Kaikōura. This allows time for a whale-watching tour (half-day), the peninsula walk (half-day), and a dolphin swim or kayak trip. If you're keen on the Kaikōura Coast Track, budget at least two full days for the hike. The town is compact, so you can easily explore on foot. Aim to arrive early in the day to maximise your first afternoon.
