Haast Village is a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast, where the Haast River meets the Tasman Sea. This remote outpost serves as the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu, offering a raw, untamed landscape of rainforest, glaciers, and rugged coastline. It's the last stop for supplies before heading south to the glaciers or north to the beaches — a place where the weather changes in minutes and the wilderness feels palpable.
Highlights & What to See
- Haast River Safari — Jet boat up the Haast River into lush rainforest, with chances to see white herons and eagles.
- Ship Creek Walk — A short boardwalk through swamp forest and dunes, ending at a wild beach where driftwood piles high.
- Monro Beach Walk — A 30-minute forest trail to a remote beach where Fiordland crested penguins nest in season (Nov–Feb).
- Haast Pass Highway — The scenic drive over the pass is dotted with waterfalls, including Fantail Falls and Thunder Creek Falls.
- Jackson Bay — Head 20 km south to this tiny fishing village for fish and chips on the wharf, with views of the Southern Alps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through Haast in a day — stop for a jetboat ride, a walk, and a meal at the local pub. If you want to explore the side tracks and beaches, base yourself here for two nights. The Haast area is best as a break between Wanaka (2 hours east) and Franz Josef Glacier (1.5 hours north), so plan a relaxed afternoon and an early start next day.
