Haast Township is the wild, weather-beaten heart of the West Coast, a tiny settlement where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient rainforest and the only sounds are roaring surf and native birds. This is the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu, a place of raw, untamed beauty that feels like the edge of the world. With a population barely topping 100, Haast is less a town and more a basecamp for adventurers drawn to glaciers, remote beaches, and the rugged Haast Pass.
Highlights & What to See
- Haast River Walk: A short, easy boardwalk through dense podocarp forest leads to a stunning viewpoint over the Haast River, where you can watch kayakers navigate the turquoise braids or spot white herons (kotuku) wading in the shallows.
- Ship Creek & the Dune Lake Walk: Just north of town, this dual walk takes you through nikau palm groves to a tranquil dune lake, then across a windswept beach where driftwood and seal skeletons tell stories of the sea. Keep an eye out for Hector's dolphins surfing the waves.
- Monro Beach Walk: A 30-minute forest walk leads to a remote, boulder-strewn beach where Fiordland crested penguins (tawaki) come ashore to nest from July to December. The track is muddy and dramatic, with waterfalls and mossy rocks.
- Haast Pass Lookout: A short, steep climb rewards you with panoramic views of the Southern Alps' peaks and the braided Haast River valley, especially magical at golden hour when the light paints the mountains pink.
- Haast Visitor Centre: Don't miss this excellent DOC centre with interactive displays on the area's geology, Māori history (including pounamu/jade trade), and the region's unique flora and fauna. The staff are goldmines of real-time advice on road conditions and weather.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 days to fully appreciate Haast's raw appeal. Most travellers use it as an overnight stop between the glaciers and Wanaka, allowing time for a sunset walk at Ship Creek and a morning stroll to Monro Beach. If you're a keen tramper or photographer, a second day lets you explore the longer Okuru River or Jackson Bay, where you can watch fishing boats unload and buy fresh whitebait from the local co-op.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast River & Gates of Haast: Drive 20 minutes south for jaw-dropping views of the river canyon and the thunderous Fantail Falls and Thunder Creek Falls – perfect roadside stops on the way to Wanaka.
- Jackson Bay: New Zealand's southernmost road-accessible fishing village, 30 minutes west, with a gravel beach, resident sea lions, and the famous Craypot cafe serving blue cod and chips.
- Haast Pass: The scenic highway over the Southern Alps connects Haast to Makarora and Wanaka, with dozens of short walks, waterfalls, and alpine tarns along the way. Allow 3–4 hours for the full drive with stops.
- Fox Glacier & Franz Josef Glacier: 90 minutes north, these iconic glaciers offer heli-hikes, ice climbing, and valley walks – a must-do if you have a spare day.
- Okuru River: A 15-minute drive south leads to a wild, undeveloped river mouth where you can kayak, fish for salmon, or simply enjoy the solitude. The remote Okuru Beach is a great spot for storm watching.
