Haast Pass

Haast Pass is one of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine crossings, slicing through the Southern Alps to connect the West Coast's wild rainforests with the lakes and mountains of Otago. The drive over the pass is an adventure in itself, with waterfalls cascading directly onto the road, ancient beech forests, and turquoise rivers. It's a journey that feels like a living postcard, where every corner reveals another jaw-dropping vista.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

If you're driving straight through, allow at least 90 minutes for the 60-kilometre stretch between Haast and Makarora, but you'll want to add an extra hour or two to stop at the waterfalls and take short walks. For a more immersive experience, plan a half-day to explore several walks and soak in the scenery. Many travellers combine the pass with a stop in Wanaka or Queenstown, making it a scenic link in a longer South Island road trip.
