Two of New Zealand’s most accessible glaciers, Franz Josef and Fox, cascade down from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating a surreal landscape where ice meets lush greenery. The drive between them along State Highway 6 is one of the country’s most scenic, with views of snow-capped peaks and dense native bush. The area’s dynamic weather means the glaciers are constantly shifting, and the experience of standing before these ancient rivers of ice is genuinely humbling.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Valley Walks: Both Franz Josef and Fox have well-maintained walking tracks that lead to terminal-face viewpoints. The Franz Josef Glacier Walk (1.5 hours return) and Fox Glacier Valley Walk (1 hour return) are easy, family-friendly options that offer spectacular views of the ice.
- Heli-Hikes: For an up-close experience, tandem helicopter flights land you on the ice for guided walks among crevasses and ice caves. This is the best way to appreciate the scale and beauty of the glaciers.
- Lake Matheson: Near Fox Glacier, this mirror-still lake is famous for its reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. A gentle 1.5-hour loop walk around the lake is a must-do, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Franz Josef Hot Pools: After a day of exploring, soak in these geothermal pools surrounded by rainforest. They are fed by glacier meltwater and naturally heated, offering a relaxing end to the day.
- Okarito Lagoon: A short drive north of Franz Josef, this coastal lagoon is a bird sanctuary. Kayak or take a boat tour to spot white herons (kotuku) and other native birds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to experience both glaciers and the surrounding area. On day one, explore Franz Josef Glacier and soak in the hot pools. On day two, drive to Fox Glacier for a heli-hike or valley walk, then visit Lake Matheson in the late afternoon for the iconic reflections. If you have a third day, consider a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon or a scenic flight over the glaciers.
