Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers

Two of New Zealand’s most accessible glaciers, Franz Josef and Fox, cascade down from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating a surreal landscape where ice meets lush greenery. The drive between them along State Highway 6 is one of the country’s most scenic, with views of snow-capped peaks and dense native bush. The area’s dynamic weather means the glaciers are constantly shifting, and the experience of standing before these ancient rivers of ice is genuinely humbling.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two full days to experience both glaciers and the surrounding area. On day one, explore Franz Josef Glacier and soak in the hot pools. On day two, drive to Fox Glacier for a heli-hike or valley walk, then visit Lake Matheson in the late afternoon for the iconic reflections. If you have a third day, consider a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon or a scenic flight over the glaciers.
