Central Otago, the world's southernmost wine region, is a stunning patchwork of dramatic mountain backdrops, fast-flowing rivers, and arid, rocky landscapes. This is New Zealand's premier pinot noir territory, but you'll also find exceptional riesling, chardonnay, and pinot gris. The region's four main sub-regions — Gibbston, Cromwell, Bannockburn, and Wanaka — each have their own microclimate and personality, making a winery-hopping tour an unforgettable journey through both wine and scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Gibbston Valley — Just east of Queenstown, this is the coolest sub-region, known for elegant, aromatic pinot noirs. Visit the famous Gibbston Valley Winery, with its cheese shop and cave tours, or the smaller, boutique Peregrine Wines with its striking architecture.
- Bannockburn — Near Cromwell, this hot, dry area produces some of New Zealand's most powerful pinots. Don't miss Felton Road, an iconic biodynamic estate, or the rustic Mt Difficulty Wines, where you can taste with panoramic views of the Kawarau River.
- Cromwell Heritage Precinct — A restored gold-mining town turned wine hub, with cellar doors like Aurum Wines and Misha's Vineyard. Stroll the historic streets and grab a coffee at a local café.
- Wanaka — The northernmost sub-region, with stunning lake views and wineries like Rippon (a must for its organic wines and incredible setting) and Maude Wines, which also has a cellar door in town.
- Cycle the Gibbston River Trail — A gentle 18km ride past vineyards, with plenty of stops for tastings and picnics.
- Central Otago Wine Trail — A self-drive route connecting cellar doors; pick up a map from any visitor centre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to explore the wineries properly — one day for Gibbston and Cromwell, another for Bannockburn and Wanaka. If you're based in Queenstown, you can easily do a day trip to Gibbston (30 minutes away) or Cromwell (45 minutes). But to really soak up the region's diversity, base yourself in Cromwell or Wanaka for a night or two, allowing leisurely tastings and time to enjoy the scenery.
