On the wild Catlins coast, Cathedral Caves are a dramatic series of sea-carved chambers that feel like a prehistoric cathedral. Accessible only at low tide, the caves open onto a stunning sandy beach flanked by sheer cliffs. The main cave soars 30m high and extends 200m into the cliff, with smaller side caves and passages to explore. The walk from the car park through native bush adds to the sense of discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Cathedral Cave: The grand chamber with its lofty ceiling and echoing acoustics is the star attraction. Bring a torch to explore the darker recesses.
- Waipati Beach: The golden-sand beach leading to the caves is perfect for a stroll, with views of the rugged coastline and often few crowds.
- Tide Pool Exploration: At low tide, rock pools near the caves teem with small marine life – a delight for kids and nature lovers.
- Nearby McLean Falls: A short drive away, these beautiful waterfalls cascade through native forest, offering a lovely bush walk and a refreshing spray.
Suggested Time to Spend
