Cardrona Valley

Nestled between the Southern Alps and the braided rivers of the West Coast, the Cardrona Valley is a ruggedly beautiful corridor that feels a world away from the tourist throngs. This is New Zealand at its most raw: ancient rainforests cling to steep slopes, waterfalls tumble from hanging valleys, and the road winds past historic gold-mining relics. For travellers on a self-drive journey between Wanaka and the West Coast, the Cardrona Valley offers a chance to slow down, breathe in the pure air, and step into a landscape that has barely changed since the first European settlers arrived.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least half a day to explore the valley’s key sights – stop for lunch at the Cardrona Hotel, hike to Bridal Veil Falls, and browse the historic remnants. If you’re skiing or mountain biking, plan a full day or overnight. The valley is often used as a scenic detour between Wanaka and Queenstown (via the Crown Range Road), so you can easily combine a 2–3 hour drive with several short stops.
