Baldwin Street, located in the quiet suburb of North East Valley, Dunedin, is officially the world's steepest residential street. With a gradient of 35%, it's a gravity-defying spectacle that draws visitors for the sheer thrill of walking (or attempting to drive) up its tarmac. The street is flanked by charming wooden villas, and the view from the top over Dunedin's harbour and the Otago Peninsula is a rewarding payoff for the lung-busting climb. Don't miss the annual Cadbury Jaffa Race, where thousands of chocolate balls are rolled down the street in a fundraising event.
Highlights & What to See
- Conquer the climb: Walk from the bottom to the top – it's only 350 metres but feels like a vertical hike. The angle is disorienting, and the houses appear to lean into the hill.
- Photo ops: Capture the optical illusion of the street's steepness. The best shot is from the bottom looking up, or from the top looking down over the rooftops.
- Drive it (if you dare): Many visitors attempt to drive to the top. A manual car and a steady hand are recommended – the gradient is extreme.
- Jaffa Race (February): If you're in town during the annual charity event, you'll see thousands of Jaffas (chocolate balls) race down the street in a colourful, sugary spectacle.
- Nearby attractions: Combine a visit with the Otago Peninsula, Dunedin's Railway Station, and the city's vibrant café scene.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour for the climb, photos, and taking in the views. It's a quick stop that's easily combined with exploring Dunedin city centre (10 minutes' drive away) or a half-day trip to the Otago Peninsula. Visit early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Dunedin City Centre: Victorian architecture, the iconic Dunedin Railway Station, and the Otago Settlers Museum are all within a 10-minute drive.
- Otago Peninsula: Wildlife encounters (albatross, penguins, seals) and stunning coastal scenery, just 20 minutes away.
- The Catlins: Rugged coastline, waterfalls, and the famous Nugget Point lighthouse – a 1.5-hour drive southwest.
- Moeraki Boulders: Mysterious spherical boulders on the beach, about 1 hour north of Dunedin.
