Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand’s smallest national park, but it packs a punch with golden-sand beaches, lush coastal forests, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. This is a place where you can kayak alongside seals, hike the famous Abel Tasman Coast Track, or simply laze on a beach that feels like paradise. The park’s accessibility and stunning scenery make it a must-do on any South Island itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Abel Tasman Coast Track: One of NZ’s Great Walks, this 60 km track weaves through native bush, over granite headlands, and along pristine beaches. You can do day walks or a multi-day tramp with hut or camping stays.
- Kayaking in the Marine Reserve: Paddle around Tonga Island and spot fur seals, little blue penguins, and maybe dolphins. Guided tours are available from Marahau or Kaiteriteri.
- Golden Bay Beaches: Anchorage, Bark Bay, and Onetahuti are postcard-perfect spots for swimming, picnicking, or just soaking up the sun.
- Water Taxi Adventures: Hop on a water taxi to access remote parts of the track or to combine hiking with a scenic boat ride. It’s a great way to see the coast without walking the whole track.
- Cleopatra’s Pool: A natural rock water slide and swimming hole near the track – fun for a refreshing dip on a hot day.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least two full days to truly appreciate the park. Day one: take a water taxi to a beach, hike a section of the track, and kayak. Day two: explore the inland tracks or relax on a beach. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Nelson or Motueka can still give you a taste – take a water taxi to Anchorage and walk back to Marahau (about 4-5 hours). For the full experience, allocate 3-5 days to walk the entire Coast Track.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaiteriteri: A lively beach town with golden sand, boat cruises, and kayak rentals – the main gateway to the park.
- Marahau: The southern entrance to the park, with accommodation, cafes, and tour operators.
- Nelson: The “Sunshine Capital” – explore its arts scene, craft breweries, and nearby Abel Tasman is an easy day trip.
- Golden Bay & Farewell Spit: West of the park, Golden Bay offers wild beaches, the Pupu Springs, and the Farewell Spit bird sanctuary.
- Kahurangi National Park: For more rugged hiking and the Heaphy Track, another Great Walk, just a short drive away.
