Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand’s smallest national park, but it packs a punch with golden-sand beaches, lush coastal forests, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. This is a place where you can kayak alongside seals, hike the famous Abel Tasman Coast Track, or simply laze on a beach that feels like paradise. The park’s accessibility and stunning scenery make it a must-do on any South Island itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Spend at least two full days to truly appreciate the park. Day one: take a water taxi to a beach, hike a section of the track, and kayak. Day two: explore the inland tracks or relax on a beach. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Nelson or Motueka can still give you a taste – take a water taxi to Anchorage and walk back to Marahau (about 4-5 hours). For the full experience, allocate 3-5 days to walk the entire Coast Track.
