Westland National Park is a wild, untamed slice of New Zealand's South Island, where the Southern Alps plunge straight into the Tasman Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a realm of glaciers, rainforests, and dramatic coastal scenery, offering some of the most accessible glacier walks on earth. The park's centerpiece is the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, but beyond the ice, you'll find serene lakes, lush valleys, and a sense of isolation that defines the West Coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to experience the park's highlights without rushing. Spend one day exploring Franz Josef Glacier and the nearby walks (like the Sentinel Rock or Terrace Track), and a second day on the Fox Glacier side, including Lake Matheson and a glacier view walk. If you're a keen hiker, add a third day for the Copland Track or a heli-hike onto the ice. The park is compact enough that you can base yourself in Franz Josef village and drive to Fox Glacier (30 minutes) for the day.
