Westland National Park is a wild, untamed slice of New Zealand's South Island, where the Southern Alps plunge straight into the Tasman Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a realm of glaciers, rainforests, and dramatic coastal scenery, offering some of the most accessible glacier walks on earth. The park's centerpiece is the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, but beyond the ice, you'll find serene lakes, lush valleys, and a sense of isolation that defines the West Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – Walk to the terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the ice for an up-close encounter with this dynamic river of ice.
- Fox Glacier – Slightly less crowded, offering similarly dramatic views and a chance to see the glacier from the Lake Matheson track.
- Lake Matheson – Famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, best photographed at dawn or dusk.
- Ōkārito Lagoon – A pristine coastal wetland with walking trails and kayaking opportunities; keep an eye out for white herons.
- Copland Track – A multi-day hike leading to natural hot pools at Welcome Flat Hut, surrounded by alpine scenery.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild black-sand beach with historic gold mining relics and views of the Southern Alps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience the park's highlights without rushing. Spend one day exploring Franz Josef Glacier and the nearby walks (like the Sentinel Rock or Terrace Track), and a second day on the Fox Glacier side, including Lake Matheson and a glacier view walk. If you're a keen hiker, add a third day for the Copland Track or a heli-hike onto the ice. The park is compact enough that you can base yourself in Franz Josef village and drive to Fox Glacier (30 minutes) for the day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- West Coast Glaciers – The twin glaciers are the main draw, but don't miss the lesser-known Ōkārito Lagoon and the coastal views at Ōkārito.
- Hokitika – A charming town with greenstone (pounamu) workshops, a wild beach, and the Hokitika Gorge with its vivid turquoise water.
- Whataroa – The gateway to the Ōkārito Kiwi Sanctuary, where you can spot the rare rowi kiwi on a guided night tour.
- Haast Pass – A scenic drive over the Southern Alps linking the West Coast to Wanaka and Queenstown, with waterfalls and short walks en route.
- Punakaiki – Famous for the Pancake Rocks and blowholes, about two hours north, a great addition for a full West Coast road trip.
