Stretching 132 km from Greymouth to Ross, the West Coast Wilderness Trail is a world-class cycle trail that plunges you into the untamed heart of New Zealand's wild west coast. This mostly off-road trail follows historic railway lines, gold rush-era water races, and pristine lakeshores, offering a perfect blend of easy riding, rich history, and jaw-dropping scenery. With a well-graded gravel surface and gentle gradients, it's accessible to casual cyclists and families, yet delivers enough immersion to satisfy seasoned adventurers.
Highlights & What to See
- Greymouth to Kumara: Ride through native forest and past the historic Brunner Mine site, where you can explore the remains of a 19th-century coal mine and the tragic Brunner Bridge.
- Lake Brunner (Moana): Savor a coffee at the charming Moana village, then pedal along the lakeshore with reflections of the Southern Alps — a perfect photo stop.
- Kumara to Hokitika: Traverse the Kawhaka Pass, where the trail follows old gold-mining water races carved into the hillside, with views over the Tasman Sea.
- Hokitika Gorge: A short detour to the famous turquoise waters of Hokitika Gorge — take the swingbridge walk for an unforgettable vista.
- Hokitika to Ross: The final leg passes through lush farmland and coastal forest, ending in the historic gold-rush town of Ross, where you can try your hand at gold panning.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most riders complete the full trail in 2–3 days, with overnight stops in Kumara (or Moana) and Hokitika. If you’re short on time, the most scenic section is the 33 km from Kumara to Hokitika, which can be done as a half-day ride. Allow 4–5 hours for that stretch, including breaks. For a relaxed pace, take three days and enjoy the small-town hospitality and side trips.
