Step back in time at Shantytown, a living-history museum on the West Coast that re-creates a gold-rush-era town with startling authenticity. The smell of wood smoke, the clang of the blacksmith’s hammer, and the rattle of a steam train through native bush transport you straight to the 1860s. It’s part open-air museum, part immersive experience – and one of New Zealand’s most engaging heritage attractions.
Highlights & What to See
- Steam train ride – Climb aboard a vintage steam locomotive for a short, scenic journey through regenerating forest; the whistle and chuffing are pure nostalgia.
- Gold panning – Try your luck in the purpose-built sluice; you’ll almost certainly find a few specks of real gold to take home.
- Historic buildings – Wander through recreated stores, a pub, a church, a schoolhouse, and a working sawmill – all filled with period artefacts.
- Blacksmith & printing demos – Watch craftspeople at work in the forge and the old print shop, with hands-on opportunities for kids.
- Underground gold mine tour – Duck into a replica mine tunnel to see how hard-rock miners worked; it’s damp, dark and fascinating.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a solid half-day (3–4 hours) to fully enjoy the train ride, pan for gold, and explore the buildings at a relaxed pace. If you’re travelling with children, you could easily stretch it to a full day – there’s a playground, picnic areas, and plenty of hands-on activities. Arrive early to avoid the midday tour-bus crowds.
