Lake Moeraki is a serene, dark-water lake nestled in the temperate rainforest of South Westland, on New Zealand's wild West Coast. It's a place where the only sounds are birdsong and the gentle lapping of water, offering a true escape into nature. The lake is part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area, and its shores are fringed with ancient kahikatea and rimu trees, creating a mystical atmosphere that feels untouched by time.
Highlights & What to See
- Wildlife Encounters: Lake Moeraki is famous for its rare Fiordland crested penguins (tawaki), which nest in the rainforest. Guided twilight tours offer a chance to see them coming ashore.
- Glow Worm Dell: A short, easy walk through the forest leads to a dell where thousands of glow worms illuminate the banks of a small stream—a magical experience after dark.
- Lake Moeraki Kayaking: Paddle across the mirror-like lake, surrounded by native bush and mountains. It's a peaceful way to absorb the scenery and spot waterfowl.
- Monro Beach Walk: A 1.5-hour return hike through coastal forest to a wild beach, where you might see fur seals and, in season, penguins.
- Scenic Flights: Small plane or helicopter trips from the nearby airstrip offer spectacular views of the lake, glaciers, and the Southern Alps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two nights at Lake Moeraki. The essence of the experience is slow immersion: arrive by mid-afternoon, take a kayak out, then enjoy a guided penguin tour at dusk. The next morning, do the Monro Beach walk before heading south to Fox or Franz Josef. If you're short on time, a day trip from Haast is possible, but you'll miss the magic of the evening wildlife.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast: 40 km north, the gateway to the West Coast, with the Haast River, blue pools, and the Haast Pass Highway.
- Fox Glacier & Franz Josef Glacier: About 1.5–2 hours south, these famous glaciers offer ice hikes, heli-hikes, and stunning valley walks.
- Jackson Bay: A scenic drive south of Haast to a remote fishing village with a café and views of the open Tasman Sea.
- Ship Creek: A short stop on the Haast Highway with a dramatic beach and a walk through dune forest.
