Lake Mapourika

Mirror-still and moody, Lake Mapourika is a darkwater lake draped in native rainforest on the West Coast, just north of Franz Josef Glacier. Its name means “the lake of the bitter waters” in Māori, but don’t let that put you off—this is one of New Zealand’s most photogenic spots, especially at dawn when the Southern Alps reflect perfectly in its glassy surface. The lake is a sanctuary for birdlife and a launching point for kayak adventures into the wild heart of Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is plenty to soak up the lake’s tranquility. Spend an hour or two walking the easy lakeside track or launching a kayak; combine with a visit to Ōkārito Lagoon and the Franz Josef Glacier access point for a full day of West Coast wilderness without rushing.
