Hokitika is a wild and wonderful West Coast town where the Tasman Sea meets untamed rainforest. Once a bustling gold-rush port, today it charms visitors with its bohemian vibe, driftwood sculptures lining the beach, and a proud tradition of pounamu (greenstone) carving. The air smells of salt and bush, and the sunsets over the Hokitika River mouth are pure magic.
Highlights & What to See
- Hokitika Gorge – A short walk leads to suspension bridges and jaw-dropping milky-turquoise water, set against native bush. It’s a must-photo spot.
- Glow Worm Dell – Just a five-minute stroll off the highway, this free attraction lets you see thousands of glow worms twinkling in the dark. Bring a torch.
- National Kiwi Centre – Get up close with live kiwi birds, tuatara, and giant eels you can feed. Great for families and rainy days.
- Hokitika Beach & Driftwood Art – Stroll the wild beach where locals build ephemeral sculptures from driftwood. Look for the iconic “Hokitika” sign made of branches.
- Pounamu & Local Art Galleries – Visit workshops like Bonz ‘n’ Stonz or The Jade Factory to see greenstone carving in action and buy authentic Māori designs.
- Hokitika Wildfoods Festival – If you’re here in March, this eccentric festival celebrates everything from whitebait fritters to huhu grubs – a true taste of the Coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one full day and one night in Hokitika. Arrive by mid-afternoon, explore the beach and glow worm dell at dusk, then hit the gorge and kiwi centre the next morning. If you’re into hiking or art, add another half-day. The town is compact – you can see the main sights without rushing.
