Few places on Earth let you walk up to a living glacier snout, and Franz Josef Glacier is one of the most accessible. This 12 km tongue of ancient ice tumbles from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest, creating a surreal landscape where snow and fern meet. The roar of cracking ice, the milky blue meltwater, and the sheer scale of the glacier face make it a must-see on any West Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Valley Walk – An easy 1.5 km track from the car park leads to a viewing platform at the terminal face. Watch for falling ice and listen to the glacier groan.
- Heli-Hike – The ultimate way to experience the ice: a scenic helicopter flight lands you on the glacier, where you strap on crampons and explore crevasses, ice caves, and seracs with a guide.
- Lake Wombat & Peters Pool – Two short walks near the township offer mirror reflections of the glacier and surrounding peaks, especially stunning at sunrise.
- Franz Josef Hot Pools – Soak tired muscles in natural geothermal pools surrounded by native bush – a blissful end to a day on the ice.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – See rare kiwi and tuatara up close, with a conservation focus that tells the story of this unique region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day for Franz Josef. The valley walk takes 1–2 hours, but a heli-hike requires a half-day (allow 3–4 hours from check-in to return). If you're short on time, a morning or afternoon is enough for the valley walk and hot pools. Many travellers base themselves here for one night to catch both the glacier and the nearby Okarito Lagoon the next day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier – Just 23 km south, Fox Glacier offers a similar experience but with fewer crowds and the stunning Lake Matheson for mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Okarito Lagoon – A 30-minute drive north, this unspoiled coastal lagoon is perfect for kayaking and birdwatching, including the rare white heron (kotuku).
- Whataroa – The White Heron Sanctuary Tours here (seasonal) take you by boat to the only mainland breeding colony of kotuku.
- Hokitika Gorge – About 1.5 hours north, this vibrant turquoise gorge has a swingbridge walk through dense rainforest – a classic West Coast photo stop.
- Haast Pass – Heading south, the drive over Haast Pass takes you past waterfalls, blue pools, and into Mount Aspiring National Park.
