On the banks of the Grey River, the Brunner Industrial Site is a hauntingly beautiful relic of New Zealand’s industrial past. Once the heart of a thriving coal-mining and brick-making operation, this historic reserve now offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the workers who toiled here. The remnants of brick kilns, chimney stacks, and industrial machinery are slowly being reclaimed by native bush, creating an evocative atmosphere that combines history with nature. A short, easy walk leads you through the site, with informative panels explaining the significance of each structure and the tragic 1896 mine explosion that claimed 65 lives.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow about 45 minutes to an hour to explore the site at a leisurely pace. The walk is short and flat, so you can easily combine it with other stops in the Greymouth area, such as the Shantytown heritage park or the nearby Monteith’s Brewery. If you’re a history buff, you might want to linger longer to read all the interpretative signs.
