One of the world's great train journeys, the TranzAlpine cuts a dramatic path across New Zealand's South Island, linking Christchurch on the Pacific coast with Greymouth on the Tasman Sea. Over the 4.5-hour trip, you'll climb from the Canterbury Plains through the Southern Alps, passing through 19 tunnels and over numerous viaducts, with the alpine scenery unfolding from the comfort of a panoramic carriage. The open-air viewing car is a must for photographers and fresh-air seekers, while the café car serves decent coffee and snacks. This isn't just transport — it's a highlight in itself.
Highlights & What to See
- Canterbury Plains to the Alps: Watch the flat farmland gradually give way to the foothills and then the dramatic mountain scenery.
- Waimakariri River Valley: The train hugs the braided river, with stunning views of its turquoise waters and shingle beds.
- Arthur's Pass National Park: The train pauses briefly at Arthur's Pass village (you can break your journey here to explore the park's hiking trails).
- Otira Viaduct: A modern engineering marvel that curves high above the Otira River gorge — keep your camera ready.
- West Coast Rainforest: As you descend toward Greymouth, the scenery shifts to lush temperate rainforest, a complete contrast to the eastern side.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside a full day for the return journey (Christchurch–Greymouth–Christchurch) — the train departs early morning and returns late afternoon. If you're short on time, a one-way trip is also rewarding, especially east-to-west to catch the morning light on the Alps. For a deeper experience, consider breaking the journey at Arthur's Pass for a night or two of hiking before continuing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Christchurch: Start or end your journey in the Garden City, exploring its rebuilt city centre, punting on the Avon River, and the Canterbury Museum.
- Greymouth: The western terminus offers a chance to visit the nearby Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki and the historic Shantytown heritage park.
- Arthur's Pass National Park: Alight here for world-class day walks like the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall or the challenging Avalanche Peak.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers: A few hours' drive south of Greymouth, these iconic glaciers are a natural extension of a West Coast itinerary.
- Hanmer Springs: About 90 minutes north of Christchurch, this thermal resort is a perfect place to soak tired muscles after the journey.
