Franz Josef is a small town on New Zealand's West Coast, best known as the gateway to the spectacular Franz Josef Glacier. This dynamic river of ice descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating a unique landscape where you can walk among ancient trees and see glaciers up close. The town itself is compact, with a friendly vibe, offering cafes, restaurants, and tour operators that make it a perfect base for glacier adventures.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – Take a guided heli-hike or a scenic flight onto the glacier to experience its blue ice and crevasses. For a budget option, walk the short track to the glacier viewpoint.
- Lake Matheson – Just a short drive away, this mirror-like lake offers stunning reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The easy loop walk is a must-do, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – See the rare rowi kiwi in a nocturnal house and learn about conservation efforts. A great rainy-day activity.
- Sentinel Rock Walk – A short walk through rainforest with views of the glacier terminal face. Look for signs of glacial retreat.
- Hot Pools – Relax in the Glacier Hot Pools, surrounded by native bush, after a day of hiking.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1-2 nights in Franz Josef. One full day allows for a glacier activity (heli-hike or flight) and a visit to Lake Matheson. If you have two days, add a longer hike like the Roberts Point Track or explore the nearby Okarito Lagoon.
