Franz Josef is a small town on New Zealand's wild West Coast, best known as the gateway to the Franz Josef Glacier. This dynamic, rapidly moving glacier descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating a rare and dramatic landscape. The town itself is compact and traveller-focused, with a handful of cafes, gear shops, and tour operators ready to help you explore the ice.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – Experience the glacier up close via a guided heli-hike or a walk to the terminal face viewpoint. The ice is constantly shifting, so every visit is unique.
- Fox Glacier – A short drive south, this equally impressive glacier offers similar guided walks and scenic flights. Combine both for a full West Coast glacier experience.
- Lake Matheson – Near Fox Glacier, this mirror-like lake reflects Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm days. The easy loop track is a must for photographers.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – See the rare rowi kiwi in a nocturnal house and learn about conservation efforts. A great rainy-day option.
- Hot Pools – Soak in the Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools, a perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking or ice climbing.
- Sentinel Rock Walk – A short, steep track offering panoramic views of the glacier valley and surrounding peaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two nights in Franz Josef. This allows one full day for a glacier hike or heli-tour and a second day for exploring nearby Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson, or the coastal walks. If you're short on time, a single night can still cover a glacier walk and a soak in the hot pools, but you'll miss the area's quieter side.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier – Just 25 minutes south, offering another glacier experience and the iconic Lake Matheson.
- Punakaiki – About two hours north, famous for the Pancake Rocks and blowholes at Dolomite Point. A scenic drive along the coast.
- Hokitika – A charming town with a strong arts scene, greenstone (jade) workshops, and the Hokitika Gorge. It's a good stopover between Franz Josef and Punakaiki.
- Okarito – A tiny coastal settlement with a beautiful lagoon and kiwi sanctuary. Great for kayaking and birdwatching.
- Whataroa – The departure point for tours to the Kotuku (white heron) nesting colony, a rare wildlife spectacle.
