The Whataroa River carves a braided path through the heart of South Westland, its milky-blue waters fed by the glaciers of the Southern Alps. This wild, untamed river is the gateway to one of New Zealand's most remarkable wildlife experiences — the only mainland breeding colony of the rare kotuku, or white heron. The river valley is a landscape of raw beauty, with dense rainforest clinging to steep hillsides and the constant rumble of gravel shifting in the current.
Highlights & What to See
- White Heron Sanctuary Tours — The undisputed star here. Take a guided boat trip upriver to the only breeding colony of the graceful white heron on the New Zealand mainland. The tour is a serene journey through braided river channels and native bush, culminating in a viewing hide where you can watch these elegant birds and their chicks from late September to January.
- Scenic River Flats — The wide, gravelly river flats are perfect for a quiet picnic or a short walk. Listen for the call of the South Island robin and spot the tracks of introduced deer and native weka.
- Okarito Lagoon — Just a short drive north, this pristine lagoon offers kayaking, birdwatching, and the chance to see the rare Okarito kiwi on a guided night walk.
- Franz Josef Glacier — Only 25 km south, the famous glacier is a must-see. Walk to the terminal face or take a heli-hike for an up-close ice experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a half-day to fully appreciate the Whataroa River. The White Heron Sanctuary tour runs for about 2.5 hours, and you'll want time to explore the riverbanks and perhaps visit the nearby Okarito Lagoon. If you're combining with a glacier visit, start early and allocate a full day for the area.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
