Twizel is a small, purpose-built town on the edge of the Mackenzie Basin, surrounded by turquoise hydro lakes and the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps. It’s a quiet, friendly place that serves as a perfect base for exploring the nearby Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and the stunning lakes of the region. The town itself has a relaxed vibe, with a handful of cafes, a supermarket, and a surprisingly good local salmon farm.
Highlights & What to See
- Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park: Just a 45-minute drive away, this is the star attraction – hike the Hooker Valley Track, visit Tasman Glacier, and soak in the mountain views.
- Lake Pukaki: The iconic turquoise lake with stunning views of Mount Cook. Stop at the viewpoint and grab a bite at the Mount Cook Alpine Salmon shop.
- Lake Tekapo: Another brilliant blue lake, famous for the Church of the Good Shepherd and the dark-sky reserve. It’s a short drive north.
- Twizel River & Hydro Canals: Walk or cycle along the canals; in summer, you can swim or paddleboard in the clear waters.
- Salmon Farm & High Country Salmon: Visit a working salmon farm where you can feed the fish and buy fresh, smoked salmon – a must for foodies.
- Clay Cliffs: Dramatic, otherworldly rock formations near Ōmarama, about 20 minutes east – a hidden gem for photographers.
- Ben Ohau Range walks: For hikers, the trails here offer panoramic views over the Mackenzie Country.
Suggested Time to Spend
Twizel is best as a 1–2 night stop. With one full day, you can explore Mount Cook National Park (allow at least 4–6 hours for a hike and glacier views) and then visit Lake Pukaki and the salmon farm. If you have two days, add a trip to Lake Tekapo or the Clay Cliffs. The town is compact, so you won’t need extra time for the town itself.
