Few rail journeys rival the TranzAlpine for sheer drama. This 4.5-hour trip between Christchurch and Greymouth slices through the Southern Alps, giving you front-row seats to a landscape that shifts from the Canterbury Plains to the deep gorges of the Waimakariri River, then up through the Arthur's Pass National Park and down into the lush West Coast rainforest. The train's open-air viewing carriages let you feel the mountain air as you cross viaducts and pass through the 8.5-kilometre Otira Tunnel. It's a trip that feels like a moving postcard, and it's easily one of New Zealand's great day trips.
Highlights & What to See
- Canterbury Plains to Southern Alps: Watch the flat farmland give way to the foothills and then the jagged peaks of the Alps.
- Waimakariri River Valley: The train hugs this braided river, crossing it several times on high viaducts – keep your camera ready.
- Arthur's Pass National Park: The train stops briefly at Arthur's Pass village, where you can stretch your legs and soak in the alpine scenery.
- Otira Viaduct and Tunnel: A feat of engineering, the viaduct curves around a steep valley before plunging into the long tunnel under the Alps.
- West Coast Rainforest: Emerging from the tunnel, the landscape transforms into dense, mossy native forest – a complete climate change in minutes.
- Greymouth: The terminus on the West Coast, a good spot to grab a bite before the return journey or to begin a West Coast road trip.
Suggested Time to Spend
The round-trip from Christchurch takes a full day – about 9 hours including the layover in Greymouth. Most travellers do it as a day trip from Christchurch, departing early morning and returning by late afternoon. If you're self-driving, you can ride one way and drive the other (via Arthur's Pass) to save time and see the scenery from both perspectives. For a more relaxed pace, spend a night in Greymouth or Franz Josef before continuing your journey.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Arthur's Pass Village – A tiny alpine settlement with great short walks (like the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall) and a chance to spot kea parrots.
- Greymouth – The West Coast's largest town, with a historic brewery (Monteith's) and access to the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – About 2 hours south of Greymouth, these iconic glaciers offer heli-hikes and valley walks.
- Hokitika – A charming coastal town known for its pounamu (greenstone) galleries and wild beach sunsets.
- Christchurch – The train's eastern terminus, a vibrant city with a rebuilt centre, botanical gardens, and the Canterbury Museum.
