The Tekapo Canal is a man-made waterway that channels the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo into the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme, but it's far more than an industrial feature. With its surreal, milky-blue hue and the dramatic backdrop of the Southern Alps, this canal has become an iconic photo stop and a serene spot for a walk or bike ride along its banks. The water's colour, caused by glacial flour suspended in the meltwater, is almost impossibly vivid, especially on a sunny day.
Highlights & What to See
- Turquoise Waters: The canal's striking colour is a photographer's dream. The best light is in the late afternoon when the mountains cast long shadows across the water.
- Walking and Cycling: A flat, well-maintained trail runs alongside the canal, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a bike ride. You can walk from the Tekapo township to the canal's start at the lake outlet in about 30 minutes.
- Salmon Farming: Near the canal's intake, you'll find a small salmon farm where you can buy fresh salmon or even try your hand at fishing (permit required).
- Stargazing: The canal sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, the absence of light pollution makes the stars spectacularly bright.
- Mount John Observatory: While not directly on the canal, the observatory sits on a hill above Lake Tekapo and offers panoramic views of the canal and the surrounding landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily spend an hour or two walking along the canal and taking photos. If you're cycling or plan to fish, allocate half a day. The canal is a great quick stop on a road trip, but it's also worth lingering for sunset or stargazing.
