State Highway 6
State Highway 6 snakes along the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, offering one of the country's most dramatic and scenic drives. This stretch between Franz Josef and Haast is a sensory overload of rainforest, rugged coastline, and glacial rivers, with the Southern Alps as a constant backdrop. It's less a road and more a journey through the raw, untamed heart of Te Waipounamu.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – Walk to the glacier's terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the ice; the valley walk is free and gives you a sense of its immense scale.
- Lake Matheson – Just south of Fox Glacier, this mirror-still lake offers classic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm mornings.
- Ship Creek – A short boardwalk trail leads to a wild surf beach and through a kahikatea swamp forest; look for the swing bridge over the creek.
- Knights Point Lookout – A pull-off with panoramic views over the Tasman Sea and coastline; perfect for a picnic stop.
- Monro Beach Walk – A 30-minute walk through coastal forest to a secluded beach where Fiordland crested penguins occasionally come ashore (best at dusk).
- Haast River Bridge – The longest single-lane bridge in New Zealand; stop to watch jet boats and kayakers on the milky-blue river.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to drive the 130 km (81 miles) from Franz Josef to Haast, including stops. The road is winding and narrow in places, with frequent one-lane bridges – take your time. Most travellers break the drive with walks and photo stops, so plan for 5–7 hours of driving with plenty of pauses. If you're short on time, a half-day from Franz Josef to Fox Glacier and back is doable, but you'll miss the southern highlights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef – Base yourself here for glacier activities and hot pools; the town is a hub for guided walks and heli-tours.
- Fox Glacier – Smaller and less touristy than Franz Josef, with its own glacier access and the nearby Lake Matheson.
- Haast – The gateway to the World Heritage-listed Haast Pass; explore the river valleys and waterfalls like Fantail Falls and Thunder Creek Falls.
- Westland Tai Poutini National Park – The road cuts through this park; stop at the visitor centre in Franz Josef for trail maps and weather updates.
- Okarito – A peaceful coastal lagoon town with kayaking and the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary; look for rare rowi kiwi on a night tour.
