Nestled on the shores of Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes National Park, St Arnaud is a serene alpine village that serves as the gateway to some of New Zealand's finest hiking and water-based adventures. With its crisp mountain air, mirror-still lake, and a palpable sense of tranquility, this tiny settlement offers a genuine escape into nature, far from the tourist crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Rotoiti: Kayak, paddleboard, or simply stroll along the shores of this stunning glacial lake, framed by beech forest and snow-capped peaks. The water is so clear you can see trout gliding beneath your boat.
- Mount Robert Circuit: A classic day hike that climbs through red beech forest to open tussock slopes with panoramic views over the lake and the surrounding Travers Range. The full circuit takes 5–6 hours, but shorter options exist.
- Angelus Hut Track: For experienced trampers, this challenging overnight route leads to one of New Zealand's most iconic backcountry huts, perched beside a tarn beneath the jagged Angelus Peak. Book ahead in summer.
- St Arnaud Range Track: A steep but rewarding climb that offers sweeping vistas of the entire national park. Allow 4–5 hours return for this strenuous hike.
- Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project: Explore predator-free forest walks where native birds like kākā, robins, and bellbirds thrive. The short Peninsula Walk is a great introduction.
Suggested Time to Spend
St Arnaud is a perfect stopover for one or two nights. With one full day, you can tackle a half-day hike like the St Arnaud Range Track or Mount Robert Circuit, then spend the afternoon on the lake. If you have two days, add an overnight tramp to Angelus Hut or explore the nearby Travers River. Most visitors combine St Arnaud with a drive between Picton and the West Coast, making it an ideal one-night break.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
