Rising dramatically behind Queenstown, the Remarkables are a jagged, alpine ridgeline that delivers some of New Zealand's most exhilarating mountain experiences. Despite the name, there's nothing remarkable about the crowds here — you'll find far fewer people than at nearby Coronet Peak, yet the terrain is arguably more spectacular. The range offers a ski area in winter and world-class hiking in summer, with panoramic views that stretch across Lake Wakatipu to the distant peaks of Fiordland. Whether you're strapping on skis or lacing up hiking boots, the Remarkables demand your attention.
Highlights & What to See
- The Remarkables Ski Area: A skier's paradise with steep chutes, wide groomers, and a terrain park. The access road is an adventure in itself — a winding, sealed climb with heart-stopping views.
- Lake Alta: A short, steep hike from the ski-field carpark leads to this pristine alpine lake, nestled in a glacial cirque. The water is impossibly clear, and the surrounding rock walls amplify the sense of isolation.
- Remarkables Walkway: A 4–5 hour return hike from the ski-field base that follows the ridgeline, offering 360-degree views of the Southern Alps, Lake Wakatipu, and the vast basin below.
- Wye Creek Track: A lesser-known trail that descends from the saddle into a beech forest, passing waterfalls and a swingbridge. It's a great option for a half-day escape from the crowds.
- Stargazing: The Remarkables are part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches overhead like a cosmic highway.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you're skiing or snowboarding, you can easily spend a full day on the slopes — the ski area operates from 9am to 4pm. For hikers, a half-day is enough for Lake Alta or the Wye Creek Track, while the Remarkables Walkway requires a solid 4–5 hours. If you're short on time, a scenic drive up the access road (allow 30 minutes each way from Queenstown) and a short walk around the ski-field base will still reward you with unforgettable views. Most visitors combine a visit with other Queenstown activities, so plan at least half a day dedicated to the range.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Queenstown: The adventure capital of New Zealand is just 30 minutes' drive away. Combine a morning on the mountain with afternoon bungy jumping, jet boating, or wine tasting in the Gibbston Valley.
- Arrowtown: A historic gold-mining town with charming cottages and autumn colours. It's a 40-minute drive via the Crown Range Road, which offers its own spectacular views.
- Glenorchy: The gateway to Paradise and the Rees-Dart Track. Drive 45 minutes from Queenstown to soak up the scenery that inspired the Misty Mountains in The Lord of the Rings.
- Coronet Peak: Another ski area just 20 minutes from Queenstown, with a different vibe — more family-friendly and with night skiing. It's easy to do both ski areas in a week-long trip.
