Tucked into the verdant hills of the West Coast, Reefton is a gold-mining ghost town that refuses to fade away. This quirky little settlement was the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have electric street lighting (1888), and its heritage buildings still glow with a nostalgic charm. Today, Reefton is a gateway to wild rivers, dense native forests, and the kind of offbeat history that rewards those who linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Heritage Walk: Stroll past the 1908 post office, the stately courthouse, and the old pubs. Interpretive panels tell tales of gold rushes, floods, and the town's pioneering electricity grid.
- Reefton Distillery: A small-batch gin distillery using local botanicals. The tasting room is cosy and the staff love to chat about their craft.
- Victoria Conservation Park: Miles of walking and mountain-biking trails through dense podocarp forest. The Murray Creek Loop is a gentle half-day walk past old mining relics.
- Inangahua River: A classic West Coast river for gold panning (try your luck at the public fossicking area) or a peaceful picnic on its gravel banks.
- Blackwater Mine & Ghost Town: About 10 km south, this abandoned mining settlement has eerie ruins and a short bush walk to an old battery stamper.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the town centre and do one short walk, but if you want to hike deeper into the conservation park or try gold panning, plan for a full day. Overnight stays are rewarding: the historic pubs offer budget accommodation and a chance to soak up the local atmosphere after dark.
