Owaka is a small, unassuming town on the Catlins coast, where the wild Pacific meets lush native bush. It's the perfect base for exploring the rugged Catlins region, known for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife.
Highlights & What to See
- Purakaunui Falls: One of New Zealand's most photographed waterfalls, a three-tiered cascade plunging through native forest, just a short walk from the carpark.
- Cathedral Caves: Massive sea caves accessible at low tide, with a dramatic cathedral-like interior. Check tide times before visiting.
- Nugget Point: A iconic lighthouse perched on a rocky headland, with stunning views and a chance to spot sea lions, seals, and yellow-eyed penguins.
- McLean Falls: A beautiful waterfall on the Tautuku River, reached via a pleasant walk through rimu and beech forest.
- Waipapa Point Lighthouse: A historic wooden lighthouse overlooking a sandy beach, often home to sea lions and elephant seals.
- Tunnel Hill: A historic railway tunnel, now a walkway, offering a glimpse into the region's pioneering past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Owaka itself is a sleepy town, but the surrounding Catlins attractions warrant at least two full days to explore properly. If you're short on time, a full day driving the loop from Owaka to the main sights (Purakaunui Falls, Cathedral Caves, Nugget Point) is doable, but you'll miss the quieter spots. For a relaxed pace, base yourself here for two to three nights, allowing for weather delays and wildlife watching.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Dunedin: Two hours north, famous for its Scottish heritage, Victorian architecture, and Otago Peninsula wildlife.
- Slope Point: The southernmost point of the South Island, with dramatic coastal views.
