Owaka is a small, unassuming town on the Catlins coast, where the wild Pacific meets lush native bush. It's the perfect base for exploring the rugged Catlins region, known for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Owaka itself is a sleepy town, but the surrounding Catlins attractions warrant at least two full days to explore properly. If you're short on time, a full day driving the loop from Owaka to the main sights (Purakaunui Falls, Cathedral Caves, Nugget Point) is doable, but you'll miss the quieter spots. For a relaxed pace, base yourself here for two to three nights, allowing for weather delays and wildlife watching.
