Okarito is a tiny, serene village on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, best known for its vast tidal lagoon and as a prime spot for kayaking and birdwatching. The settlement, once a gold-mining hub, now feels like a forgotten paradise, with only a handful of permanent residents. The lagoon, a protected wetland, is home to the rare white heron (kōtuku) and offers a peaceful escape from the busier tourist centers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Okarito is best enjoyed as a half-day or full-day excursion from Franz Josef or Whataroa. If you're short on time, combine the Trig Walk and a kayak trip on the lagoon for a memorable morning. For a more relaxed pace, stay overnight in one of the few accommodations and enjoy the tranquility after the day-trippers leave.
