Nelson Lakes National Park is a pristine alpine wonderland in the northern South Island, where beech forests, mirror-like lakes, and rugged mountains create a serene escape. The park's centerpiece, Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa, offer crystal-clear waters perfect for kayaking and swimming in summer, while the surrounding peaks provide world-class hiking and skiing. This is a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in New Zealand's wild beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Rotoiti – Swim, kayak, or simply soak up the reflections of the surrounding mountains. The lakeside track is an easy stroll with stunning views.
- Mount Robert Circuit – A classic day hike offering panoramic views of Lake Rotoiti and the Travers Range. The climb is steep but rewarding.
- Travers-Sabine Circuit – A multi-day tramp through beech forests, alpine meadows, and river valleys. It's one of New Zealand's Great Walks, but less crowded.
- Lake Rotoroa – The quieter, larger sibling of Rotoiti. Rent a rowboat or take a guided water taxi to explore its remote shores.
- Blue Lake (Rotomairewhenua) – A sacred lake with some of the clearest water in the world, visible only from a viewing platform (no swimming allowed).
- St. Arnaud Village – The gateway to the park, with a visitor center, a few cafes, and the historic St. Arnaud Church.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two to three days to properly experience Nelson Lakes. Use one day for a short walk around Lake Rotoiti and a hike up Mount Robert, then a second day for exploring Lake Rotoroa or a section of the Travers-Sabine Circuit. If you're a keen tramper, allow four to five days for the full circuit. The park is compact enough for a quick overnight stop, but you'll want to linger.
