Nelson Lakes National Park is a pristine alpine wonderland in the northern South Island, where beech forests, mirror-like lakes, and rugged mountains create a serene escape. The park's centerpiece, Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa, offer crystal-clear waters perfect for kayaking and swimming in summer, while the surrounding peaks provide world-class hiking and skiing. This is a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in New Zealand's wild beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least two to three days to properly experience Nelson Lakes. Use one day for a short walk around Lake Rotoiti and a hike up Mount Robert, then a second day for exploring Lake Rotoroa or a section of the Travers-Sabine Circuit. If you're a keen tramper, allow four to five days for the full circuit. The park is compact enough for a quick overnight stop, but you'll want to linger.
