Nestled beneath New Zealand's highest peak, Aoraki/Mount Cook, this tiny alpine village is the ultimate base for exploring the Southern Alps. With the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki and the massive Tasman Glacier on its doorstep, it offers jaw-dropping scenery and world-class hiking. The village itself is compact, with a handful of lodges, a visitor centre, and the historic Hermitage Hotel, but the real draw is the raw, glacial landscape that surrounds it.
Highlights & What to See
- Hooker Valley Track – An easy, spectacular walk across swing bridges to a viewpoint of Aoraki and the Hooker Glacier terminal lake. Allow 3 hours return.
- Tasman Glacier & Lake – Short walk to the viewing platform for iceberg-dotted Tasman Lake. For a closer look, book a boat tour among the ice.
- Kea Point Track – A 30-minute walk from the village to a lookout over Mueller Glacier and the Hochstetter Icefall.
- Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre – Learn about the mountain's climbing history and the famous New Zealander who conquered Everest.
- Glacier Explorers – Boat trips on the terminal lake of the Tasman Glacier, weaving between icebergs (seasonal).
- Stargazing – As part of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, the village offers incredible night skies. Join a guided tour or simply step outside after dark.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and one night, which allows you to complete the Hooker Valley Track and a glacier boat tour, plus enjoy a sunset view of Aoraki. If you're a keen hiker, two nights gives you time for a longer route like the Sealy Tarns Track or a heli-hike onto the Tasman Glacier. The village is small, so you won't need more than two days unless you're tackling multi-day tramps.
