New Zealand's most celebrated Great Walk, the Milford Track carves through Fiordland National Park from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. This 53.5 km (33 mi) tramp is a pilgrimage through ancient rainforests, over alpine passes, and past thundering waterfalls—most famously Sutherland Falls, plunging 580 m. It's a four-day journey that rewards with some of the most dramatic scenery on Earth, but requires advance booking and a reasonable level of fitness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate four days and three nights for the classic guided or independent walk. Most people start with a boat ride across Lake Te Anau to Glade Wharf, then walk roughly 10–15 km per day, staying in huts or lodges. The season runs late October to late April, and you'll need to book huts or guided packages well in advance—often months ahead for prime dates. If you're short on time, consider a day walk on the first section from Glade Wharf to Clinton Hut and back, but you'll miss the full experience.
