New Zealand's most celebrated Great Walk, the Milford Track carves through Fiordland National Park from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. This 53.5 km (33 mi) tramp is a pilgrimage through ancient rainforests, over alpine passes, and past thundering waterfalls—most famously Sutherland Falls, plunging 580 m. It's a four-day journey that rewards with some of the most dramatic scenery on Earth, but requires advance booking and a reasonable level of fitness.
Highlights & What to See
- Sutherland Falls: A jaw-dropping 580 m cascade, best viewed from the side track near Quintin Lodge.
- Mackinnon Pass: The track's highest point at 1,069 m, offering panoramic views of glacier-carved valleys and peaks.
- Lake Ada & Clinton River: Serene waters and lush mossy forests in the lower sections, teeming with birdlife like the kea and tomtit.
- Giant Gate Falls: A powerful, accessible waterfall near the end of the track, just before Sandfly Point.
- Milford Sound: The grand finale—arriving at the fiord's edge, where you can take a cruise or simply soak in the sheer cliffs and waterfalls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate four days and three nights for the classic guided or independent walk. Most people start with a boat ride across Lake Te Anau to Glade Wharf, then walk roughly 10–15 km per day, staying in huts or lodges. The season runs late October to late April, and you'll need to book huts or guided packages well in advance—often months ahead for prime dates. If you're short on time, consider a day walk on the first section from Glade Wharf to Clinton Hut and back, but you'll miss the full experience.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Milford Sound: The track ends here, so tack on a boat cruise or kayak trip to see seals, dolphins, and towering Mitre Peak.
- Te Anau: The gateway town where the track begins; explore the lakefront, glowworm caves, and Kepler Track.
- Routeburn Track: Another Great Walk starting near Glenorchy, combinable for a multi-tramp adventure through Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Doubtful Sound: A quieter, more remote fiord accessible via a cruise from Manapouri—less crowded than Milford Sound.
