Carved by ancient glaciers and flooded by rising seas, the Marlborough Sounds form a labyrinth of sunken river valleys at the top of New Zealand's South Island. This intricate network of deep blue waterways, forested ridges, and secluded coves is a world-class destination for kayaking, sailing, and hiking. The Sounds are also the gateway to the legendary Queen Charlotte Track, which threads through native bush along the ridgelines with stunning coastal views around every bend.
Highlights & What to See
- Queen Charlotte Track – A 70-km multi-day walk (or mountain-bike ride) from Ship Cove to Anakiwa, offering panoramic views of the Sounds and lush native forest.
- Marlborough Wine Region – Just inland, sample world-renowned Sauvignon Blanc at cellar doors in Blenheim and along the Wairau Valley.
- Kayaking in the Sounds – Paddle through sheltered waters past dolphins, seals, and little blue penguins; multi-day guided trips are unforgettable.
- Ship Cove – A historic landing site for Captain Cook, now a serene spot with a monument and great swimming.
- Motiara Island – A predator-free sanctuary where you can see rare native birds like the South Island saddleback and kākā.
- Pelorus Sound – The wilder, less visited sound; explore its remote bays and the scenic Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least three full days to do the Marlborough Sounds justice. Spend one day kayaking or on a boat cruise, one day hiking a section of the Queen Charlotte Track (or biking it), and one day exploring the wine region and Picton. If you're short on time, a full-day cruise from Picton that includes a walk on Motuara Island gives a fantastic taste.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Nelson – A vibrant arts and café hub with nearby beaches and national parks; 1.5 hours west of Picton.
- Blenheim – The heart of Marlborough wine country; combine wine tours with the Sounds for a perfect food-and-nature escape.
