Marlborough Sounds

Carved by ancient glaciers and flooded by rising seas, the Marlborough Sounds form a labyrinth of sunken river valleys at the top of New Zealand's South Island. This intricate network of deep blue waterways, forested ridges, and secluded coves is a world-class destination for kayaking, sailing, and hiking. The Sounds are also the gateway to the legendary Queen Charlotte Track, which threads through native bush along the ridgelines with stunning coastal views around every bend.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least three full days to do the Marlborough Sounds justice. Spend one day kayaking or on a boat cruise, one day hiking a section of the Queen Charlotte Track (or biking it), and one day exploring the wine region and Picton. If you're short on time, a full-day cruise from Picton that includes a walk on Motuara Island gives a fantastic taste.
