Marahau is the laid-back gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, a sun-drenched slice of New Zealand's South Island where golden beaches meet lush native bush. This small settlement at the park's southern entrance is all about the outdoors — kayakers paddle turquoise waters, walkers follow the famous coastal track, and the vibe is refreshingly unhurried. With a handful of cafes and a strong sense of coastal calm, Marahau feels like a secret you're lucky to have found.
Highlights & What to See
- Abel Tasman National Park – The main event. Explore golden-sand beaches, granite outcrops, and crystal-clear estuaries by foot or kayak.
- Abel Tasman Coast Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this multi-day trail offers stunning coastal scenery and is accessible from Marahau.
- Marahau Beach – A long, sandy stretch perfect for swimming at high tide and walking at low tide when the sand flats appear.
- Kaiteriteri Beach – Just a short drive north, this golden beach is a favourite for swimming and launching water taxis into the park.
- Marahau Estuary – Great for birdwatching and peaceful paddling at high tide; look for herons, oystercatchers, and kingfishers.
- Sea kayaking – Paddle alongside seals, caves, and secluded coves on guided trips that depart from Marahau.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 days in Marahau to fully appreciate the park. A day for kayaking or a boat cruise, another for a walk on the Coast Track (or a section of it), and a third to relax on the beach or explore nearby Kaiteriteri. If you're short on time, a single day trip from Nelson is possible, but you'll miss the magic of a sunset paddle.
